Credentials & Creme

The real problem is that “Will college exist in the future” is bickering with “Should tribalism and social stratification exist?”, which are really separate threads. So, in 10 years, where will all the credentials go? Well, into new Credentials & Creme.

We can definitely expect more atomic social stratification. The speed, the sequence in which you do things, adjusting for your initial constraints. e.g. SAT by demographics. Give me the difference between “{{medium area}} I went to {{ivy}} then {{mid-size start-up}}” vs. “{{hard area}} then {{ivy}} then {{less than 10 employee startup}}”.

Emergent credentials and weird flexes are the same things: reading a book prior to someone else is a weird flex about information availability. The Sapiens guy is the new hot topic, but it was really just Mark Zuckerberg’s 2015 book club, which means he read it before that. No actual position, I love his work!

So, will our kids know what taxis are? What’s a taxi again? Yes, our kids will call fake meat, “meat”. Will meat exist in 10, 20 years? Meat is a parallel for credentials. Labels are changing folks.

Credentials are no longer gatekeepers for knowledge transfer, but the hair on your neck still stands up when you need to cash them in. Credentials are becoming more atomic, transparent and accessible while new forms of social stratification will emerge. Sounds like what happened to money!
